Aurora held the door open to a cottage-style home while Leela carried a sleeping toddler inside. His blond head and arms fell over her shoulders. “You’ve done such a good job taking care of him.”

“Thank you. I try,” Leela said in whisper. “Welcome to my humble abode.”

Aurora looked around the adorable little house, but the high ceilings and natural light that poured made the interior feel larger. “This is such a cute place.”

Leela smiled brightly. “Thank you. Do you like it too, Preston?”

No sounds came from the child. Aurora leaned down and saw his eyes closed. “I think he’s asleep.”

“Oh, yes. I think the drool I feel seeping through my shirt is a strong indicator of that.”

Aurora wrinkled her nose. “Do you want me to make tea while you put him down for his nap? I’m pretty sure I can figure out your kitchen.”

Leela kissed the boy on the temple. “Please. And I think I’ll put on a new shirt while I’m at it. The diffusers and loose tea are in the drawer right of the sink.” Leela disappeared into the hallway, leaving Aurora to her task.

Aurora prepared the diffusers and poured a stream of hot water over them. The spicy aroma wafted up and awakened her senses. When she brought the tray into the living room, she saw Leela’s leg outstretched on the burgundy couch. “Is your leg bothering you?”

“Only in the way that creates pain,” Leela said with half grimace. “But now that you know, it doesn’t seem as bad.”

“Leela, just because I know doesn’t mean you can’t tell me when it hurts. I could have carried Butterscotch around today.”

“Sometimes I need to do things by myself to prove that I can. My ego doesn’t allow help very easily. At least, that’s what my therapist says.”

“You see a therapist?” Aurora asked, but Leela remained silent. “I’m not going to judge if you do.”

“Alright. Yes, I see a therapist. There was a thing that happened awhile ago and it was suggested that I continue to see one.”

It was obvious to Aurora that Leela wanted to drop the topic, but it was equally obvious that whatever event Leela avoided was critical knowledge. “I’m not trying to pry, but can you tell me what happened? This might be information I can use to help.”

Leela’s lips formed a tight line and the muscles of her jaw twitched as if she were grinding her teeth. Whatever happened, she did not want Aurora to know. “Fine! I tried to kill myself when I was in college. Now you know. Happy?”

Happy was the last word Aurora would have used to describe herself. She was more in the emotional neighborhood of stunned, devastated, and flummoxed. Her mouth hung open.

“See, that’s why I didn’t want to tell you. That’s why I don’t tell anybody. People learn something like that and everything changes. I’m no longer happy-go-lucky Leela, I’m headcase Leela.”

Aurora forced her own feelings to the side and tried to put herself in Leela’s position. Based on
